    RGDSN's 2026 Annual Meeting Awardees

Each year, RGDSN does a callout for nominations of individuals and organizations who are making a positive impact on our community to be recognized at our annual meeting. This year's meeting was held on July 13, where, in addition to a presentation on the state of the nonprofit, the following were recognized with awards.

Outstanding Community Partner Award - AHEPA 501

Our 2026 Outstanding Community Partner award recognized a group that has shown incredible generosity and stewardship. AHEPA 501 - The Tasso Chronis Chapter, Albuquerque NM USA, is a fraternity in New Mexico whose membership works with numerous nonprofits and charitable organizations to help our local New Mexico community and beyond. From naming RGDSN the beneficiary of their annual golf tournament—raising an incredible $11,000 via their silent auction—to giving our members a literal spotlight to open the tournament and sell raffle tickets, their actions speak volumes. We are profoundly grateful for member Pavlos Panagopoulos’s sponsorship of our Denim and Diamonds Gala over the last two years, and the organization's recent United Soccer tailgate fundraiser.

Young Self-Advocate Award - Aleeya Strober

Aleeya made history as the very first self-advocate to the State of New Mexico for the National Down Syndrome Congress, and was recently honored right on the New Mexico Senate floor. Nominated by her mother, she said, "At just 12 years old, Aleeya, you have already shown the world what true resilience and determination look like. You have taken personal public school challenges and transformed them into a powerful platform for advocacy, all while remaining a deeply joyful and positive child."

Outstanding Individual Role Model - Fabian Romero

True leadership means extending a helping hand, a comforting word, or a supportive eye to those around you—and that is exactly who Fabian Romero is.

Fabian is 21 years old and attends the Transitional program at Volcano Vista High School, where he was crowned homecoming King. Fabian is a role model as an uncle to his 3 young nieces and nephews, as well as a loving brother and son. As a dedicated member of the 321 Dance Crew, Fabian leads by example through his hard work and immense focus, always uplifting his fellow dancers. Beyond the studio, he filled our entire community with pride this past February during Down Syndrome Day at the State Capitol, representing RGDSN on the House floor and accepting the official legislative proclamation. With his family, Fabian helped sell raffle tickets as a fundraising effort and raised over $2000 for RGDSN.

    Outstanding Educator: Laura Lagrange

As an educator at the Albuquerque Sign Language Academy and a dedicated support person for our network, Laura Lagrange became invaluable to us instantly. She passionately guides students with all disabilities—including those who are Deaf or have Down syndrome—to engage in vibrant programs like magnet making and flower decorating. But Laura’s impact doesn't stop there. As a military veteran, a mountain rescue trainee, a folkloric dancer, a masterful costumer, and a talented hair braider, she brings her whole, rich heart to everything she does. She volunteers readily, far beyond her job description, teaching us all how to speak up, be kind, and get involved.

    Outstanding Educator - Jane Heider

Behind every thriving student is an educator who refuses to let them doubt their potential. An exceptional educator meets students exactly where they are, keeping them joyfully and patiently engaged. Jane Heider embodies everything a teacher should be. Her deep compassion and tireless advocacy for children requiring unique educational supports have changed lives across New Mexico. Jane builds environments where students don't just learn—they truly believe in their own capabilities and thrive.

    Outstanding Leadership: Tori Shaver

As a third-year medical student at the University of New Mexico's School of Medicine, Tori Shaver is already leaving an indelible mark on healthcare. For five years, she has shared a beautiful, deep bond as a Big Sister to Milagros Rogers Gonzalez. We are profoundly inspired by Tori's visionary work to integrate Down syndrome education and advocacy directly into medical school curricula by collaborating with our self-advocates. Combined with her impactful committee work for the Southwest Region's Down Syndrome Congress, her leadership teaches us all what it looks like to build a more inclusive future.

Outstanding Business Partner: Perinatal Associates of New Mexico

Over the years, Perinatal Associates of New Mexico has shown us what true corporate advocacy looks like. Instead of waiting on the sidelines, the team at PANM takes a wonderfully proactive approach—connecting expectant mothers with RGDSN early on, actively supporting their own employees who have family members with Down syndrome, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our families. Together, they help us fulfill our shared objective to celebrate the wonderful possibilities in our community.

    Outstanding Volunteer: Lila Thiebaut

Volunteers are the backbone of RGDSN, and our next recipient brings an extra dose of joy to everything she touches. Whether she is running our merchandise table, selling raffle tickets, or assisting and co-teaching our dance classes, Lila Thiebaut is a notable volunteer. But more than that, she is a spectacular sibling and a role model for our entire network. Lila is a sophomore at UNM on a presidential scholarship studying art education. On the 4th of July, she was recognized by the Albuquerque Journal as one of 250 New Mexicans who make a difference in our state. Her genuine patience, profound kindness, and joyful smile lift up everyone around her. Her loving nature shines so brightly—not just on her beloved sister, Hope, but on every single member of the RGDSN family.

    Rising Star: Riley Martin

If you want to see a true ambassador for the Down syndrome community, look no further than Riley Martin. From being the first and only member with Down syndrome singing in the La Cueva High School choir, to her active inclusion in the Girl Scouts, Riley breaks boundaries daily. Nationally, she has represented New Mexico at the USA Special Olympics in Minnesota, appeared live on TV, and was even selected for the grand Times Square video presentation during the New York Buddy Walk—shining a magnificent spotlight on our community. Locally, she proudly accepted an Albuquerque City Council awareness proclamation.
