In past years, The Disability Coalition has convened two important events in connection with the legislative session that begins each January: the pre-session forum shortly before the beginning of the session and Disability Rights Awareness Days (DRAD) during the session, including a conference day and a day at the Capitol.
This year, we’re trying a new approach – combining the two events into a two-part series of DRAD events. We’ll start with the DRAD Forum in Albuquerque on Friday, January 17 and Saturday, January 18 (the weekend before the legislative session starts on Tuesday, January 21). Then we’ll be at the Roundhouse on Thursday, January 23, with a gathering in the Rotunda in the morning and a full day that you can spend meeting with legislators, touring the Capitol, and watching the Legislature in action as it gears up for the short 30-day session. So mark these dates on your calendar and plan to join us!
Part I: Pre-legislative-session DRAD Forum – Friday and Saturday, January 17-18, 2020
CNM Workforce Training Center, 5600 Eagle Rock Avenue NE in Albuquerque
On Friday, we’ll have a morning plenary covering issues that will be coming up in the New Mexico Legislature’s 2020 session and other matters of interest to the disability community. That afternoon, we’ll have breakout workshops as we’ve had at previous DRAD conferences.
On Saturday morning, there will be a legislative advocacy training to explain how the legislative process works and how you can get involved to influence legislation you care about.
This will be a great opportunity to learn about issues affecting people with disabilities and their families, and to network with others in the disability community.
Part II: DRAD at the Roundhouse – Thursday, January 23, 2020
As always, we’ll be convening at the State Capitol during the session. There will be a mid-morning gathering in the Rotunda and you’ll have the rest of the day to browse the exhibit tables, tour the Capitol building, and meet with legislators.
Please save the dates for these events, and keep an eye out for more information and registration information that we'll be sending out in the coming weeks. Plan to join members of the disability community from around New Mexico to learn about issues in the Legislature, make new contacts, and participate in policymaking that affects persons with disabilities.
We look forward to seeing many of you at the 2020 DRAD Forum and Roundhouse Day!
